Game Review: Taco Cat Goat Cheese Pizza

There are some games where you just wish with all your heart that you created them. That is how we feel about Taco Cat Goat Cheese Pizza. Just think about the margins on a simple little card game! Okay, but we aren’t here to talk about financial analysis, but instead what we genuinely think about the game.

From a humble kickstarter campaign, to one of the top 20 games on Amazon for the past few months now, this is a game to know about.

Total Game Score: 13

Creativity/Originality: 3. We debated back and forth on this category. It’s very original, and to a point creative, buttttt there’s also not much to it. Ha! It’s a Taco, Cat, Goat, Cheese, and Pizza… with a Narwhal, Groundhog and Gorilla. We love the actions associated with the special cards (like the Narwhal shown below)! But, we wish there was a little more umph to the game. Once you have played a few times, we were feeling like moving onto the next. Not one where you are wanting to play over and over to improve your strategy per-say.

Durability (packaging or game pieces): 2. Recently we read an extremely insightful post from Grandpa Beck’s Games about the durability of cards in card games, and specifically a “black core card.” In summary, many card games or decks of cards typically are made with some thicker card stock, but don’t always have a core. As a result, when you hold them up to the light, they are see through. Cards that have a core, are more durable and better quality, and specifically a “black core card” is the nicest of the cores. With that in mind, we put Taco Cat Goat Cheese Pizza to the test and rather than destroy the card my truly finding what was inside, we compared durability to Cover Your Assets. Ultimately, they seemed similar, but the box for Taco Cat Goat Cheese Pizza is remarkably less durable. Sorry y’all.

Friendly for all Ages/Skill Levels: 5. Personally, we believe this is where this game EXCELS. They created a game that is perfect for anyone, anywhere to play. No matter the age or the skills, you can pick it up, learn it and play all within less than 5 minutes. No one really has a strategic advantage… unless you count quick hands and good reaction time as strategy!

Fair Pricing: 3. Going back to my financial analysis rant… these are probably super cheap to make, especially at the quantity they are selling (over 21,000 reviews on Amazon 😳). Now, it’s only $9.99, so it’s a good priced, fun game as a small gift. That being said, we got our Monopoly Deal game as an Amazon “add-on” deal for just $4.95, so I would say this potentially may be slightly over priced. Also… in their OG kickstarter, it looks like it was only $9, so prices have increased slightly… 😉

Conclusion: If you are looking for a game to keep your kids entertained for a few hours, this one is perfect. We believe it definitely suits a younger audience if it’s to be played repeatedly, but ultimately any age group would enjoy playing a few rounds at a party or gathering. (Of course a gathering of vaccinated people, don’t @ us.) We, along with thousands of others, think that this game works great as a fun, affordable gift for a friend that is sure to draw out some smiles and a little friendly competition.
