As the warm breeze ushers in the joyous spirit of outdoor gatherings, finding the perfect backyard game to entertain friends and family becomes essential. Enter Scatter, a captivating and strategic game originating from Finland (originally called Mölkky). This game promises to bring both fun and friendly competition to your backyard, making it an excellent addition to your outdoor game collection.
What are other names for the game Scatter?
As teased above, Scatter was actually originally called Mölkky. We have also seen the game branded as “Skittles” as well!
How long does it take to set up Scatter?
Setting up Scatter is a breeze. Arrange the 12 pins in a tight cluster about 10 feet away from the throwing line. The pins should be placed upright with the numbers facing the players. Each player or team stands behind the throwing line, ready to launch the Scatter and begin the game. The simplicity of the setup ensures that you can start playing within minutes, making it perfect for impromptu backyard gatherings.
How long does a round of Scatter take to play?
On average, our rounds have lasted around 30 minutes. The suggested estimates we found said:
- 2-4 Players: Approximately 15-30 minutes per round.
- 5 or More Players: Approximately 30-45 minutes per round
Each time we have played Scatter, it actually has gone longer than I would have anticipated. However, I’m not sure if that’s because we are just not very good at the game… As the pins start to spread out more and more (learn more about the gameplay below), the number of points scored each round goes down a bit.
How many people do you need to play Scatter?
Scatter can be played with any sized group. The teams go back and forth throwing the Scatter (stick) and you can rotate who is throwing each time from your team!
Where can Scatter be played?
Scatter would be best on a well-cut lawn, artificial turf, or at the beach. If the grass is too long, the wooden pins have a harder time standing up on their own. (Learn from our mistakes people.)
How do you play Scatter?
Scatter is a game of skill and strategy designed for 2 or more players. The game consists of 12 numbered wooden pins and a throwing stick, known as the “Scatter.” Players take turns tossing the Scatter at the pins, aiming to knock them over and score points. The first player or team to reach exactly 50 points wins the game. However, surpassing 50 points will reset your score to 25, adding an exciting twist to the competition.
The gameplay of Scatter is both engaging and strategic. On each turn, players throw the Scatter at the pins, attempting to knock them over. The scoring system is straightforward: if a single pin is knocked over, the player scores the number on that pin. If multiple pins are knocked over, the player scores one point for each pin. After each turn, the pins are stood up where they fell, adding a layer of strategy as the game progresses.
The challenge lies in balancing precision and power. Players must carefully aim their throws to either score high points from single pins or knock down multiple pins to gradually build their score. The thrill of aiming for the perfect throw and the satisfaction of seeing pins tumble make Scatter an exhilarating experience for all ages.

How easy is it to store Scatter? How portable is the Scatter game?
Scatter is extremely portable and easy to throw in the stroller, back of a car, or carry over to the park. It’s similar to a Kubb game around the size and the weight with the wooden sticks.
Backyard Buffs’ Score: 5
How durable is the Scatter game? (Packaging and/or game pieces.)
Assuming that you are not going to play on cement, this game seems like it’s built to last. We haven’t had any issues with our Scatter set and have had the game for over a year now. I believe the carrying case is definitely going to be the first thing that goes because it is more of a thinner material. With the actual game pieces, there will be normal wear and tear that happens as wood hits wood, but that is to be expected!

What Age Groups are best for Scatter?
Scatter is Friendly for many Ages/Skill Levels, however the biggest skills needed are accuracy of throws to the wooden pins, and the strength to throw the wooden Scatter stick across the lawn. This seems to be best handled by around the age of 8 and then under the age of 80. But we also, don’t want to exclude any yolked grandparents or advanced toddlers, so give everyone a chance to try!

Is Scatter a fairly priced backyard game?
The Scatter set that we have is currently priced at $39.99 via Amazon. This is a great price in our opinion as it makes it one of the more affordable backyard games we have rated. I have not given it a perfect score seeing as it says it’s on sale. The .5-point swing from our rating could make up if the original price comes out to be quite a bit higher than $40.
